CreditChek Partners with Bboxx to Expand Solar Access for 17 Million Nigerians
CreditChek, a Nigerian credit infrastructure startup, has partnered with Bboxx, a global clean energy company, to support the rollout of off-grid solar power to 17 million Nigerians. The collaboration forms part of the World Bank–backed Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) program, managed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The partnership aims to use CreditChek’s technology to strengthen Bboxx’s credit assessment and customer verification processes, enabling more efficient financing for solar energy adoption across underserved communities.
Partnership Overview
According to reports from TechCabal and The Condia, Bboxx selected CreditChek as its technical partner for the DARES program in Nigeria. CreditChek will provide credit intelligence tools to help assess customers’ repayment capacity and streamline access to pay-as-you-go (PAYGo) solar systems.
The collaboration is expected to improve the financial inclusion framework around off-grid energy solutions by integrating digital credit scoring into solar distribution and financing. No financial details of the partnership were disclosed.
About the DARES Program
The Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) initiative is a $750 million program funded by the World Bank and implemented through Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
Its objective is to expand access to reliable electricity for households and small businesses through renewable energy solutions, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
The REA signed grant agreements with eight renewable energy companies earlier in 2025 under the program’s Stand-Alone Solar (SAS) component, which collectively aims to reach 17.5 million Nigerians. Bboxx is among the selected companies participating in this rollout.
Bboxx’s Role in Nigeria
Bboxx is a UK-based company that designs, distributes, and finances solar home systems and clean energy solutions. The company operates in several African markets, including Kenya, Rwanda, Togo, and Nigeria. Its participation in the DARES program aligns with its broader mission to provide affordable energy access to underserved populations.
In Nigeria, Bboxx is tasked with expanding the deployment of off-grid solar systems to homes and small businesses under the REA’s supervision. The company’s inclusion in DARES supports its long-term target of increasing clean energy adoption across the country.
