TS Academy Funds ₦1 Billion in Scholarships to Boost Africa’s Digital Workforce

TS Academy has announced the award of over ₦1 billion in scholarships to 3,000 Africans, marking one of the largest privately driven efforts to expand access to digital education on the continent. The initiative, aimed at breaking financial and accessibility barriers, provides learners with fully funded training, mentorship, and job placement support in some of the most in-demand tech fields.

The scholarships cover disciplines including Software Engineering, Product Design, Artificial Intelligence and Automation, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, DevOps, and Project Management. According to the academy, recipients will not only gain technical training but also access to mentorship programs, career guidance, and in some cases, essential work tools such as laptops.

“Many young Africans have the drive and intelligence needed to thrive in tech, but lack access to the right opportunities,” the academy said in a statement. “This program is designed to bridge that gap and provide equitable pathways to success.”

Building a Pan-African Talent Pipeline

While based in Nigeria, TS Academy says its scholarship beneficiaries span several African countries, including Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. The broader goal is to create a Pan-African network of tech professionals equipped with both skills and global relevance.

The ₦1 billion figure represents the total tuition and training value awarded across all scholarship recipients. Some beneficiaries received full sponsorships, while others received up to 90% discounts on program fees. This approach, the academy explained, allows it to reach more learners while maintaining program sustainability.

Beyond technical courses, TS Academy also emphasizes practical exposure through real-world projects and access to hiring partners across the continent. Graduates are expected to receive career development support that includes mentorship from industry experts and introductions to potential employers in Africa’s growing tech ecosystem.

Addressing Africa’s Growing Digital Skills Gap

The announcement comes at a time when Africa’s demand for digital skills is outpacing supply. According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), over 230 million jobs in sub-Saharan Africa will require digital skills by 2030. Yet, the region faces limited access to quality, affordable training.

TS Academy’s scholarship program appears positioned to contribute to closing this gap. However, questions remain about the long-term impact and transparency of such large-scale commitments. For instance, the academy has not yet disclosed the specific breakdown of the ₦1 billion valuation, whether it represents actual funding disbursed, the total cost of training, or projected value based on course pricing.

Despite these questions, the initiative highlights a growing movement among African edtech institutions to make tech training more inclusive. By offering large-scale scholarships, TS Academy joins a growing list of regional players pushing for greater participation of African youth in global tech careers.
