Apple has introduced a fresh set of AI-powered editing features for its Photos app, giving iPhone users new ways to fix, improve and expand their pictures without needing third-party editing apps.

The announcement was made at this year's WWDC 2026, where Apple unveiled several new capabilities powered by its Apple Intelligence platform.

AI can now fix poorly framed photos

One of the biggest additions is a new feature called Reframe, which uses artificial intelligence to adjust the perspective of a photo after it has been taken.

The tool is designed to help users correct common photography mistakes. Whether a distracting object appears in the background, a subject is slightly off-centre, or the camera angle could have been better, Reframe allows users to reposition the image as though they had moved the camera during the original shot.

Users can simply drag the image to change its perspective while previewing the edits in real time.

As adjustments are made, Apple’s AI automatically generates new content around the edges of the image to fill empty spaces created by the repositioning. According to Apple, the system only creates content where necessary, helping the edited image remain consistent with the original scene.

Extend tool expands images beyond their original frame

Apple is also introducing a new Extend feature that allows users to make photos larger without cropping important details.

The tool can add more space around a subject, create a wider composition, or help straighten crooked horizons while preserving the image.

Instead of cutting parts of the photo away, Extend uses generative AI to create additional content beyond the original frame, giving users more flexibility when editing images.

The feature could prove useful for social media creators, photographers and everyday users looking to improve photo composition after capturing an image.



Cleanup gets smarter with generative AI

Apple's existing Cleanup feature is also receiving a significant upgrade.

The tool, which allows users to remove unwanted objects from photos, will now use improved generative AI models to produce more natural-looking results.

Users can tap, brush or circle anything they want removed, such as background distractions, unwanted objects or accidental photobombers. The AI then fills the space with more realistic image details, making edits less noticeable than before.

Apple continues its AI push

The latest additions form part of Apple's broader effort to integrate artificial intelligence directly into everyday apps through Apple Intelligence.

Rather than focusing solely on chatbots and assistants, Apple is increasingly using AI to enhance practical tasks such as photo editing, writing, communication and productivity.

With Reframe, Extend and the upgraded Cleanup tool, Apple is aiming to make professional-style photo editing more accessible to everyday users directly from the Photos app.

The new features are expected to roll out alongside Apple's upcoming software updates announced at WWDC 2026.
