Meta and Reliance Sign First AI Data Centre Partnership in India
Meta has entered its first artificial intelligence data centre partnership in India through a collaboration with Reliance Industries, signalling a deeper push into infrastructure required to support large-scale AI workloads.
The agreement centres on a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data centre to be developed in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The facility will form part of an expanding partnership between both companies, which began with Meta’s investment in Reliance’s Jio Platforms and later extended into a $100 million joint venture focused on enterprise AI solutions for India and international markets.
India’s growing role in global AI infrastructure
The deal reflects India’s emergence as a major destination for AI and cloud infrastructure investment, as global technology companies seek additional capacity to support increasing demand for computing power. Firms including Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI and Uber have recently announced expanded investments in data centre operations across the country.
Domestic and international players are also accelerating expansion plans. Infrastructure investors such as AirTrunk, backed by Blackstone, have outlined multi-billion-dollar commitments, while Indian conglomerates including Adani Group and Tata Consultancy Services continue to scale their data centre portfolios to support AI-driven demand.
Expansion, energy strategy and long-term capacity growth
The Jamnagar facility will be leased by Meta and is expected to be powered by renewable energy, with cooling supported through desalinated seawater. Reliance will manage development, energy supply, connectivity and operations, positioning the conglomerate as a full-service infrastructure provider for global technology firms.
India’s data centre capacity has expanded significantly in recent years, rising from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to about 1.5 gigawatts in 2025. Projections suggest capacity could exceed 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, driven by AI workloads, cloud adoption and regulatory incentives aimed at attracting foreign investment.
Meta has also secured nearly 1 gigawatt of additional renewable energy capacity in India through agreements with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy, which will support its wider infrastructure footprint in the country. The financial terms of the Reliance partnership and the specific AI workloads to be hosted at the facility were not disclosed.
