Microsoft is changing how often millions of people receive updates for its Edge browser. Beginning in August, the company will move Edge's Stable channel from a monthly release schedule to a faster two-week update cycle, allowing new features, security improvements, and performance enhancements to reach users more quickly.

The change will take effect with Microsoft Edge version 152, which is scheduled to arrive on the Stable channel on August 27, 2026. After that, users can expect fresh updates every two weeks rather than waiting an entire month for the next release.

For most users, the shift may sound like a minor technical adjustment. In reality, it reflects a broader trend across the software industry as companies look for faster ways to deliver new capabilities while responding more quickly to security threats and user feedback.

Why Microsoft Is Changing the Schedule

According to Microsoft, the move is designed to help organisations and everyday users benefit from innovation faster.

Rather than bundling large numbers of changes into a single monthly update, the company plans to deliver smaller, more frequent releases. Microsoft says this approach will allow businesses to test and deploy updates more efficiently while ensuring users gain access to new features sooner.

"Microsoft Edge is moving to a two-week release cycle, bringing new features and improvements to users and organisations faster than ever," the company said in its announcement.

The strategy mirrors a broader shift among modern software platforms that increasingly favour continuous updates over large periodic releases.

What Changes for Businesses

While the Stable channel will move to a faster schedule, Microsoft is keeping its Extended Stable channel unchanged.

Introduced in 2021, Extended Stable is designed for organisations that prefer predictability over rapid feature rollouts. Under the new system, Extended Stable users will continue receiving major feature updates every eight weeks through every fourth release, including versions 156, 160, and 164.

Security updates will continue to be delivered to both channels whenever necessary.

This means businesses that rely on strict testing and deployment processes can maintain their existing update cadence, while organisations that want access to new capabilities sooner can take advantage of the faster Stable channel.

Smaller Updates, Faster Innovation

One consequence of the new schedule is that individual updates will likely feel less dramatic.

Because Microsoft will now release updates twice as often, each update is expected to contain fewer changes than the larger monthly packages users are accustomed to receiving. However, the overall pace of innovation is expected to increase as features arrive sooner rather than waiting for the next monthly release window.

For users, this could mean faster access to browser improvements, security enhancements, AI-powered features, and performance optimisations.

Why It Matters

Web browsers have become far more than simple tools for accessing websites. They now serve as primary workspaces for communication, productivity, collaboration, and increasingly, artificial intelligence.

As competition between Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and other browsers intensifies, speed of innovation is becoming a key differentiator. The ability to deliver new features quickly while maintaining security and stability is increasingly important as AI tools become embedded directly into browser experiences.
