OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.6, its latest generation of artificial intelligence models, unveiling a new three-tier lineup called Sol, Terra, and Luna. The release marks a shift in both the company's naming strategy and how it positions AI models for different performance and pricing needs.

Unlike previous releases that relied on labels such as "Instant" or version increments alone, GPT-5.6 introduces distinct names for each capability tier. Sol is the flagship model designed for the most demanding workloads, Terra targets general-purpose enterprise use, while Luna focuses on speed and affordability for high-volume applications.

Three Models for Different AI Workloads

The new lineup is designed to serve different categories of users rather than offering a single model for every task.

GPT-5.6 Sol is OpenAI's most capable model, built for advanced coding, scientific research, cybersecurity, and complex reasoning tasks. It also introduces new reasoning controls that allow the model to spend more time solving difficult problems.

GPT-5.6 Terra offers a balance between performance and cost, providing capabilities comparable to previous flagship models at a lower price point.

GPT-5.6 Luna is the fastest and most cost-efficient option, making it suitable for applications that require high throughput without sacrificing reliability.

Stronger Performance Across Key Areas

OpenAI says GPT-5.6 delivers improvements across software engineering, cybersecurity, biology, and professional knowledge work.

The flagship Sol model introduces an "Ultra" reasoning mode that uses multiple AI agents to solve complex tasks collaboratively, helping it outperform previous OpenAI models on several internal benchmarks.

The company also says the models achieve stronger results in coding tasks, vulnerability research, and scientific analysis while using fewer computing resources than earlier generations.

Limited Preview Before Wider Release

For now, GPT-5.6 is only available to a limited group of trusted partners through OpenAI's API and Codex platform.

OpenAI plans to expand access to ChatGPT, the API, and Codex over the coming weeks, although the company has not confirmed a public release date.

The three models will also follow a new pricing structure, with Sol positioned as the premium option, Terra targeting mainstream enterprise workloads, and Luna offering the lowest-cost access for developers building large-scale AI applications.

With GPT-5.6, OpenAI is signalling a move towards more specialised AI products, giving developers and businesses greater flexibility to choose models based on performance, speed, and cost rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
