Ghana Opens Applications for Mobile Broadband and 5G Spectrum Licences
Ghana's National Communications Authority (NCA) has opened applications for new spectrum licences to support the rollout of mobile broadband and 5G services as the country seeks to expand next-generation connectivity and encourage greater competition in the telecommunications sector.
The licensing process is open to existing telecommunications operators as well as qualified new entrants that meet the Authority's eligibility requirements.
Expanding 5G Competition
According to the NCA, eligible applicants include licensed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), Broadband Wireless Access Providers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and new entrants that are 100% Ghanaian-owned.
The regulator said the Request for Applications (RFA) and Selection and Award Procedure provide detailed information on the available spectrum lots, eligibility criteria, rollout obligations, evaluation process and licensing requirements.
Interested organisations can obtain the application documents through the Authority as Ghana moves to accelerate nationwide deployment of mobile broadband and 5G infrastructure.
Supporting Digital Connectivity
The announcement follows the NCA's recent decision to amend the wholesale 5G licence issued to Next Gen Infraco Limited (NGIC), removing the company's exclusive rights to operate Ghana's wholesale 5G infrastructure.
The regulator said the policy change is intended to promote greater competition, attract new investment and encourage innovation within Ghana's telecommunications industry while supporting broader access to next-generation mobile services across the country.
