Google Vids Introduces AI Avatars and Gemini Omni for Video Creation
Google has announced new AI-powered features for Google Vids, introducing personalised digital avatars and expanded video generation capabilities powered by Gemini Omni.
The update allows users to create AI-generated videos featuring digital versions of themselves while using prompts, images and conversational editing tools to produce and refine video content.
Create AI Videos with Your Own Digital Avatar
Google Vids users can now generate a personalised digital avatar using a selfie and a short voice recording.
The avatar is designed to resemble the user and can be used to create AI-generated videos for presentations, training materials and other workplace communications.
According to Google, avatars are linked to the user's Google account and protected with SynthID, the company's invisible AI watermarking technology. Access to the feature is currently limited to eligible users aged 18 and above in supported regions.
Gemini Omni Expands AI Video Generation
Google is also integrating its multimodal Gemini Omni model into Vids, allowing users to generate videos using a combination of text prompts and reference images.
The model can create new AI videos, replace backgrounds, improve lighting, add visual effects and make other enhancements to existing recordings.
The update also introduces step-by-step editing, enabling users to refine videos incrementally instead of restarting the creation process after every change.
Competing in the AI Video Market
Originally launched as an AI-assisted presentation tool within Google Workspace, Google Vids is evolving into a broader AI video creation platform aimed at businesses and enterprise users.
The addition of personalised avatars and conversational editing capabilities positions Google more directly against AI video platforms such as HeyGen, Synthesia, Captions and D-ID, which offer similar AI-powered video generation and avatar services.
Google said the new features are intended to help organisations create professional videos more efficiently while maintaining safeguards around identity verification and AI-generated content.
