Guinea Launches NimbaPay National Instant Payment System
Guinea has launched NimbaPay, a national instant payment platform designed to modernise the country's financial infrastructure and expand access to interoperable digital payments.
The system is led by the Central Bank of the Republic of Guinea (BCRG) and implemented by Guinéenne de Monétique (GuiM). It enables real-time transactions between banks, electronic money providers and microfinance institutions, allowing consumers and businesses to transfer funds across different financial service providers.
Building an Interoperable Payment Ecosystem
The initiative received strategic and technical support from the AfricaNenda Foundation, which worked with local stakeholders to develop the platform with interoperability and financial inclusion at its core.
NimbaPay is powered by Mojaloop, an open-source payment software designed to support inclusive instant payment systems.
By connecting different financial institutions, the platform is expected to make digital payments faster, more secure and more accessible, while reducing some of the barriers and costs associated with transferring money between separate providers.
Supporting Guinea's Digital Economy
According to the Central Bank, NimbaPay is designed as long-term national payment infrastructure that will support everyday transactions and strengthen Guinea's digital economy.
The platform is also expected to support future digital financial services and help advance financial inclusion by making secure digital payments accessible to more consumers, businesses and government institutions.
AfricaNenda described the launch as an important milestone for Guinea's financial sector, highlighting the role of interoperable instant payment systems in building more connected and inclusive financial ecosystems across Africa.
GuiM has encouraged financial institutions that have not yet joined the platform to connect to NimbaPay as the country works to expand participation and strengthen its digital payments ecosystem.
