Japan Donates ICT Equipment to 15 Nigerian Colleges of Education
The Government of Japan has donated Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to 15 Colleges of Education across Nigeria through a UNESCO-led initiative aimed at strengthening teacher training, improving digital literacy and expanding access to quality education.
The ICT facilities were officially handed over on June 2, 2026, during a ceremony at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja attended by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, Hitoshi Kozaki.
Supporting Digital Teacher Education
The donation forms part of the Japan-funded project, Capacity Building of Teachers to Promote Continuous and Inclusive Access to Safe and Quality Education for Girls in West Africa, which is being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education in partnership with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA).
Under the programme, the 15 Colleges of Education received laptops, tablets, desktop computers, smart boards, projectors, printers and backup hard drives to strengthen teacher education, improve digital literacy and support gender-responsive teaching and learning.
According to UNESCO, the initiative is designed to enhance the capacity of teacher training institutions while promoting inclusive, technology-enabled education, particularly for girls and other vulnerable learners.
Strengthening Teacher Capacity
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Kozaki reaffirmed Japan's commitment to supporting quality education in Nigeria and across Africa. He emphasised the importance of investing in teachers to improve learning outcomes and expand access to safe, inclusive and equitable education.
The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to equip Nigerian teacher training institutions with modern digital learning tools capable of supporting more effective classroom instruction and preparing educators for increasingly technology-driven learning environments.
