OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 Family with New AI Models and Workplace Assistant
OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.6, its latest family of artificial intelligence models, introducing three new variants alongside ChatGPT Work, a workplace-focused AI assistant designed for enterprise users.
The launch strengthens OpenAI's position in the rapidly evolving AI market as competition intensifies with rivals including SpaceXAI, Anthropic and Meta.
Three Models for Different AI Workloads
The GPT-5.6 family includes Sol, Terra and Luna, each designed to serve different performance and pricing needs.
According to OpenAI, Sol is its flagship model for advanced coding, enterprise workflows and scientific research, while Terra targets mid-range use cases and Luna provides a lower-cost option for developers and businesses.
The company said the new models deliver improved efficiency, with CEO Sam Altman stating that Sol is 54% more token-efficient than previous models for AI coding tasks.
Focus on Cybersecurity and Enterprise AI
OpenAI described GPT-5.6 as its strongest cybersecurity model to date, capable of supporting defensive security tasks such as threat modelling, code reviews, vulnerability patching and simulated cyberattack exercises.
The company also introduced ChatGPT Work, an AI-powered productivity assistant that helps enterprise teams draft documents, create spreadsheets, prepare presentations and manage routine office tasks across desktop, web and mobile devices.
Competing for Enterprise AI Leadership
OpenAI positioned GPT-5.6 as a direct competitor to Anthropic's latest models, claiming benchmark results that show stronger coding performance while using fewer tokens, generating responses faster and reducing operating costs.
The company said the models are now available through ChatGPT, Codex and the OpenAI API, with pricing ranging from US$1 per million input tokens for Luna to US$5 per million input tokens for Sol.
The launch comes days after new model releases from SpaceXAI and Meta, signalling an increasingly competitive race to deliver faster, more capable and cost-efficient AI systems for businesses and developers.
