Rwanda will shut down its 3G mobile network on 30 June 2027 as the country accelerates its transition to faster 4G and 5G connectivity.

Why Rwanda Is Retiring 3G

The government says running 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks simultaneously is costly and inefficient. Retiring older networks will free up spectrum for newer technologies, improving network capacity, speeds and security.

Rwanda also plans to provisionally retire 2G by December 2028, subject to the success of the 3G migration.

Millions Face Device Upgrade

The transition could affect more than two million people who may still be using 2G devices by 2030, with the cost of 4G-enabled phones remaining a major concern.

The government will therefore work with operators to improve access to affordable 4G devices and ensure vulnerable users are not left behind.

Businesses Must Prepare Too

Companies and government agencies using 2G or 3G-dependent systems, including vehicle trackers, utility meters, security systems, payment terminals and USSD services, have been told to begin migrating to newer technologies.

Operators will also conduct trial shutdowns before the nationwide deadline to identify potential problems.

Consumers using older devices are being advised to check their 4G compatibility and upgrade ahead of the June 2027 switch-off.
