Somali National University (SNU) has launched the Somali National Artificial Intelligence Centre (SNAIC), a new Centre of Excellence established to strengthen artificial intelligence research, education, innovation, and capacity building in Somalia.

The launch, held in Mogadishu, brought together representatives from government institutions, universities, research organisations, academia, and technology experts, highlighting the country's growing focus on AI as a driver of digital transformation and economic development.

Driving AI Research and Local Innovation

The new centre will serve as Somali National University's hub for artificial intelligence research and innovation, with a mandate to develop locally driven AI solutions that address national challenges.

SNAIC will focus on key areas including machine learning, natural language processing, data science, computer vision, robotics, and AI ethics.

Supporting Digital Transformation Across Key Sectors

Beyond research, the centre will promote the adoption of AI across sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, governance, and the wider economy.

Through research, innovation, and skills development, SNAIC aims to strengthen Somalia's AI ecosystem while equipping students, researchers, and technology professionals with the expertise needed to support the country's digital transformation and long-term sustainable development.
