X has launched a rebuilt version of its Android app following nearly a year of development, promising faster performance, smoother navigation and improved reliability for users.

The Elon Musk-owned social media platform announced the refreshed Android app on Monday, saying it was built from scratch rather than being a series of updates to the existing application.

The rebuild comes after years of criticism over the Android app's performance compared with its iOS counterpart. X said the new version is designed to improve loading speeds, scrolling, notifications and the overall user experience.

A Year-Long Android Rebuild

The project began nearly a year ago when X announced plans to assemble a dedicated Android team to rethink the platform's mobile experience.

In August 2025, X head of product Nikita Bier said the company was putting together an Android "dream team" to work on the app. The focus became increasingly important as Android continued to represent a major share of X's global user base.

Bier later pointed to a strong period of Android downloads in October as another indication of the platform's importance, particularly in international markets where Android devices are more widely used.

With the new release, Bier described the project as one of the largest engineering efforts in X's history, saying the app had been rebuilt from the ground up.

Faster App, More Features

According to X, the new Android app offers faster loading, smoother scrolling and more reliable notifications. The company also believes the new architecture will allow its engineering teams to develop and release new features more quickly.

The rebuild comes as X continues to expand beyond its traditional social media offering. The company has recently introduced products including X Money and X Chat, while also developing new tools for content creation and engagement.

The improved Android experience could also help X attract new users or bring back existing ones in global markets where Android is the dominant mobile operating system.

The company has previously faced significant performance problems on Android. At one point, users reported difficulties loading X posts when opening links to the platform, highlighting the need for a more substantial overhaul of the app.

More Updates Still to Come

Despite the relaunch, X said the Android app is still a work in progress.

Bier noted that the company is continuing to improve performance on older Android devices and is working to bring Spaces, X's live audio feature, to the platform.

Other features expected to arrive on Android include X's new video editor, the ability to react to posts with video, cashtags and custom timelines.

Existing Android users can access the rebuilt experience by updating the X app through the Google Play Store.
