Cryptocurrency scams often become more convincing when users are already expecting changes to their favourite platforms.

As exchanges introduce new listings, remove existing assets, update their services or make other platform changes, scammers can take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding those announcements. Binance is now urging users to be particularly cautious during these periods.

The company says scammers often exploit moments when users are distracted or feel pressured to act quickly. Instead of relying on sophisticated technical tricks, fraudsters may simply create a sense of urgency around a legitimate exchange announcement.

Why exchange updates can create scam opportunities

Changes on cryptocurrency platforms can prompt users to search for additional information, click links or respond to messages they believe are connected to an official announcement.

Scammers can exploit this behaviour by impersonating companies, support teams or other trusted sources. They may claim to offer assistance, provide access to a promotion or direct users to a website that closely resembles the legitimate platform.

The objective is usually to convince users to reveal sensitive information, transfer funds or interact with a fraudulent website.

Five warning signs users should know

Binance has highlighted several red flags that can help users identify potential scams.

1. An unexpected message from someone claiming to represent an exchange

Users should be suspicious if someone contacts them without being asked and claims they can help with an account, transaction or platform update. Binance advises users not to engage with unsolicited requests of this nature.

2. Requests for private information

Recovery phrases, private keys, passwords and other security credentials should never be shared with someone claiming to provide support. Requests for such information can be a sign that someone is attempting to gain control of an account or funds.

3. Pressure to act immediately

Messages warning users that they will lose money unless they act immediately are another major warning sign. Creating panic can prevent people from taking the time to verify whether a request is legitimate.

4. Suspicious links

Fraudulent websites can be designed to look almost identical to legitimate exchange pages. In some cases, the difference may be difficult to notice at first glance.

Users should avoid clicking links from unexpected messages and instead access the exchange through its official app or manually enter the verified website address.

5. Offers that appear too good to be true

Promises of unusually high rewards, special bonuses or exclusive rates can be used to lure users into fraudulent schemes.

If an offer is significantly different from what has been announced through official channels, users should verify it before taking any action.

The simplest protection: pause and verify

According to Binance, users do not necessarily need advanced technical knowledge to protect themselves from many common scams.

The most important habit is to slow down when something feels unusual.

Rather than responding immediately to a message or clicking a link, users can independently check the exchange's official website, application or verified communication channels to determine whether the announcement is genuine.

Larry Cooke of Binance Africa said scammers often take advantage of moments when users are most likely to act quickly.

“Scammers don’t create windows of opportunity, they wait for them.”

He added that although cryptocurrency exchanges constantly change, the basic approach to staying safe remains the same: users should pause and verify information through official channels before acting.

Staying cautious as crypto platforms evolve

The warning comes as cryptocurrency exchanges continue to expand their services and regularly update their platforms.

While these changes can create new opportunities for users, they can also provide scammers with fresh stories and reasons to contact potential victims.

Binance said it will continue investing in user education and security awareness across its African markets as its platform evolves.

For cryptocurrency users, the message is straightforward: when an unexpected message creates urgency, stop, verify the information independently and never share private security credentials.
