Nigeria is positioning itself as a major player in Africa’s digital economy as it accelerates investments in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, technology talent and innovation.

This progress will take centre stage at GITEX NIGERIA 2026, which is scheduled to take place across Abuja and Lagos from August 31 to September 3, 2026.

The second edition of the technology and startup event will be held under the theme “Beyond Connectivity, The Bridge to Sovereign Innovation.” The event is expected to bring together government officials, technology companies, investors, startups and other stakeholders to discuss the future of Nigeria’s digital economy.

The event is being held under the patronage of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and is supported by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). The Lagos State Government has also endorsed the event.

From Digital Ambition to Implementation

GITEX NIGERIA comes as the government continues to move from announcing digital policies to implementing large-scale technology programmes.

One of the major initiatives highlighted ahead of the event is the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, which is designed to increase Nigeria’s pool of technology-skilled workers.

According to the organisers, the programme has recorded 1.87 million registrations across all 774 local government areas. More than 135,000 Nigerians have been trained through three cohorts, while community resources have extended learning opportunities to more than 300,000 people.

The programme has also created 15,000 job and opportunity pathways, reflecting the government's focus on connecting digital skills development with employment and economic opportunities.

Project BRIDGE Targets Connectivity Gaps

Alongside talent development, Nigeria is investing in digital infrastructure through Project BRIDGE, a national ICT backbone initiative aimed at expanding connectivity across the country.

The project is expected to support digital inclusion and economic development while creating as many as 20,000 direct jobs and more than 150,000 indirect jobs.

It also aims to train 5,000 young Nigerians, increase internet penetration to more than 70% and extend high-speed connectivity to millions of households, businesses, schools and hospitality establishments in underserved communities.

AI Takes Centre Stage

Artificial intelligence will be another major focus of GITEX NIGERIA 2026 as the country seeks to build an AI ecosystem that can compete globally.

The event will open in Abuja on August 31 with the GITEX NIGERIA Government Leadership and AI Summit, bringing together government leaders, regulators and other stakeholders to discuss digital public infrastructure, AI adoption and digital governance.

The organisers say the wider objective is to attract investment and partnerships that can help Nigeria develop AI infrastructure, strengthen digital resilience and increase its capacity to produce technology rather than remain primarily a consumer of imported solutions.

New Finance and Digital Assets Event

This year's edition will also introduce FDX NIGERIA by GITEX, a new platform focused on finance and digital assets.

The initiative is expected to explore how emerging financial technologies can improve financial inclusion and help more businesses participate in the formal economy.

The organisers see the platform as a bridge between financial technology innovation and international capital, particularly as African fintech companies continue to attract global attention.

Lagos Remains a Key Technology Hub

Lagos will host part of the event as the state continues to position itself as one of Africa's most important technology and business centres.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the state's contribution to Nigeria's economy and its ability to attract technology talent, investment and innovation from across Africa and beyond.

The state's participation reinforces its ambition to become an important gateway for technology-driven businesses entering Nigeria and the wider African market.

Building Digital Sovereignty

Beyond connectivity and startup growth, GITEX NIGERIA is placing increasing emphasis on digital sovereignty.

The idea is that countries should develop the infrastructure, skills, technologies and regulatory systems needed to have greater control over their digital future.

For Nigeria, this includes developing local technical talent, expanding internet infrastructure, encouraging responsible AI adoption and attracting investment into technology companies and digital infrastructure.

Nigeria's Growing AI Opportunity

The government and event organisers believe these initiatives could position Nigeria to capture a significant share of Africa's future AI-driven economic growth.

The country's large population, expanding startup ecosystem and growing technology workforce provide a potentially significant market for AI products and digital services.
