How to Reverse an Unauthorised Bank Transfer Fast in Nigeria
If money leaves your bank account without your permission, act immediately. The faster you notify your bank, the sooner it can begin investigating the transaction and taking steps to protect your account.
An unauthorised transfer could happen after someone gains access to your mobile banking app, card details, PIN, authentication credentials or other sensitive banking information. It can also occur when a customer notices a debit they did not initiate or approve.
What should you do immediately?
1. Contact your bank immediately
Use your bank's official customer-service channel, mobile app, branch or other emergency fraud-reporting channel and report the transaction.
Tell the bank that the transaction was unauthorised and ask it to open a fraud/dispute case.
Do not wait to see whether the money comes back automatically.
The CBN's consumer-protection guidance says customers should take immediate steps to notify their financial institution when their personal information has been compromised and should lodge complaints promptly.
2. Secure your account
If you believe someone has gained access to your banking credentials, ask the bank to secure the affected account and relevant banking channels.
Change compromised passwords or credentials through the bank's official channels, and never give your PIN, password or one-time authentication codes to someone claiming to be a bank representative.
The CBN also advises consumers not to disclose sensitive personal information through suspicious links or unsolicited messages.
3. Keep evidence of the transaction
Save the transaction notification, SMS, email, bank statement or app record showing:
- The amount transferred
- Date and time of the transaction
- Transaction reference
- Receiving account details, where available
- The channel used for the transaction
- Any relevant messages or alerts
Do not delete these records. They can help the bank investigate the disputed transaction.
4. Get a complaint or tracking reference
When you report the issue, ask your bank for a complaint/reference number.
The CBN's complaints process says customers should first lodge their complaint with their financial institution and obtain a complaint reference or tracking number.
Can the bank reverse the money immediately?
Not always.
A bank cannot simply guarantee that every transfer will be reversed instantly. Recovery can depend on the nature of the transaction, the payment channel, the investigation and whether the funds are still available.
This is particularly important because an unauthorised transaction is different from a wrong transfer made by the customer.
For certain instant electronic funds-transfer disputes, CBN rules provide a dispute-resolution process. The rules state that instant EFT disputes are to be resolved within three working days.
For a transfer made incorrectly because of an error by the sending institution — such as a wrong account number, wrong amount or duplicate transaction — the rules provide a specific reversal process where the sending institution makes a written request within 14 working days and the funds are available.
That rule should not be presented as a blanket guarantee that every unauthorised transfer will be refunded within one day.
What if the bank does not resolve the complaint?
If you have already complained to your bank and the matter remains unresolved, you can escalate the complaint to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The CBN's current complaints portal instructs customers to first complain to their financial institution, obtain a tracking number and allow the institution time to upload the complaint before using the CBN portal.
The CBN also says customers can escalate complaints concerning financial institutions under its regulatory purview when the institution fails to resolve the matter.
What information should you include in your complaint?
The CBN recommends that a financial complaint clearly explain what happened, when it happened, where it happened and how it happened.
You should include the amount involved, relevant transaction details, your bank's name and supporting evidence. However, do not include your PIN or password in a complaint.
Don't make the situation worse
If you have been contacted by someone claiming they can recover your money, be careful.
Do not give anyone your:
- PIN
- Password
- One-time authentication code
- Full card security information
- Banking login details
Also avoid clicking suspicious links claiming to be from your bank or the CBN. The CBN specifically warns consumers about fraudulent communications designed to obtain personal information.
The bottom line
If you notice an unauthorised bank transfer, speed matters. Contact your bank immediately, report the transaction as unauthorised, secure your account, preserve your evidence and obtain a complaint reference.
If your bank does not resolve the complaint, you can escalate it through the CBN's consumer-protection channels.
There is no universal guarantee that every unauthorised transfer will be reversed instantly, but reporting the transaction quickly gives the bank the best opportunity to investigate and pursue recovery.
