Meta, 3MTT and RAIN Launch AI Academy Nigeria to Expand Access to AI Skills and Startup Support
Nigeria Launches New National AI Training Initiative
Nigeria is taking another step toward expanding its artificial intelligence ecosystem with the launch of AI Academy Nigeria, a new capacity-building programme backed by Meta, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE), the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN).
The initiative is designed to help Nigerian developers, students, entrepreneurs and early-career professionals gain practical AI skills and move beyond learning concepts to building real-world products and businesses.
Rather than focusing solely on classroom-based learning, the programme combines technical education with startup support, pitching opportunities and hands-on development.
Three Tracks Will Power the Programme
AI Academy Nigeria will operate through three major components:
- AI Skills Development
- AI Startup Pitchathon
- Developer Bootcamp
The three tracks are aimed at people at different stages of their AI journey, from beginners developing foundational knowledge to startups and experienced developers already working on AI-powered solutions.
AI Skills Programme Offers Free Learning
The AI Skills Development programme will be available to members of the wider 3MTT community across Nigeria.
Participants will have access to courses covering areas such as generative AI, prompt engineering, data analytics and AI-powered applications.
Some of the available learning opportunities include:
- Building Generative AI Apps with Llama
- Prompt Engineering with Llama 2 & 3
- Introducing Multimodal Llama 3.2
- Generative AI in Data Analytics
- Generative AI in Social Media Marketing
- AI 101, developed by Startupbootcamp for Meta
The courses will be delivered through platforms including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp, with participants able to access the programmes at no cost.
The strongest performers will also have the opportunity to receive scholarships for paid Meta Blueprint certifications, while eligible participants can qualify for up to $5,000 in advertising credits.
Startups Can Compete for Funding
The programme also includes a Startup Pitchathon aimed at early-stage Nigerian companies using Meta's AI technologies to address real-world challenges.
Applications are open until August 21, 2026.
Ten startups will be selected to pitch at GITEX Nigeria on September 3, 2026.
Two winning companies will each receive:
- $5,000 in cash funding
- $2,000 in Meta advertising credits
- An all-expenses-paid opportunity to represent Nigeria at Meta's AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November.
The opportunity gives participating startups a chance to gain funding while also accessing international exposure and a wider technology ecosystem.
Six-Week Developer Bootcamp
Developers and startups looking for more intensive technical training will also have access to a six-week Developer Bootcamp delivered by RAIN.
Participants will work on developing functional AI products and market-ready solutions, with technical guidance and access to Meta's AI network.
The bootcamp is intended to bridge the gap between understanding AI technology and actually deploying it in products that can be used by customers.
Government and Industry Partnership
The initiative reflects growing collaboration between Nigeria's public sector and major technology companies around artificial intelligence and digital skills development.
Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani said the partnership would help equip young professionals, developers and entrepreneurs with practical skills while creating opportunities for Nigerian startups to compete internationally.
Meta's Sade Dada also highlighted the need to combine AI education with funding and opportunities for developers and founders to turn their ideas into practical solutions.
RAIN CEO Dr. Olushola Ayoola described the partnership as an example of how coordinated efforts can help build Nigeria's AI capacity at scale.
Why the Programme Matters
Nigeria has a large and growing technology workforce, but access to advanced AI training, technical resources and early-stage funding remains an important challenge for many developers and startups.
AI Academy Nigeria is designed to address several parts of that gap at the same time.
Participants can learn AI skills, developers can build products, while startups can gain access to funding and international exposure.
The programme also supports the broader objective of the 3MTT initiative, which aims to expand Nigeria's pipeline of technical talent and connect digital skills with employment, entrepreneurship and economic opportunities.
Applications Are Already Open
For aspiring AI developers and founders, the programme provides several entry points depending on their experience level.
The Startup Pitchathon application deadline is August 21, 2026, making it the most immediate opportunity for eligible startups.
With AI becoming increasingly important across technology, business and the wider economy, initiatives such as AI Academy Nigeria could play a role in preparing more Nigerians to participate in the next phase of the digital economy.
