Spotify is expanding its notes feature beyond individual songs, allowing users to add personal thoughts and context to songs, podcasts and audiobooks inside their playlists.

Spotify is making playlists more personal with the launch of “Playlist Notes,” a new feature that allows users to attach thoughts, memories and recommendations to content saved in their playlists.

The update expands on Spotify’s recently introduced User Notes, which allowed listeners to add personal captions to individual tracks.

With Playlist Notes, users can now explain why a particular song matters to them, share a memory connected to an episode or recommend an audiobook to friends.

More than just music

The feature supports more than songs. Users can add notes to podcast episodes and audiobooks saved to their playlists.

For example, a user could add a note explaining that a particular song reminds them of a specific period in their life, or recommend a podcast episode because of an important lesson it contains.

Any note added to a playlist will be visible to people who have access to that playlist.

How to add a Playlist Note

Users can add a note through the Spotify mobile app by:

  1. Opening a playlist they own or collaborate on.
  2. Finding the song, podcast episode or audiobook.
  3. Tapping the three-dot menu (…).
  4. Selecting “Add note.”
  5. Writing the note and tapping Save.

The feature is rolling out on iOS and Android across more than 100 markets.

Spotify is also adding notes from its editors

Spotify is extending the idea beyond user-generated content.

Its editorial teams can now add Editor Notes to selected songs, giving listeners additional context about why a particular track was included in a playlist.

The feature is initially appearing on major playlists including Today’s Top Hits, RapCaviar, Hot Country, All New Pop and Fresh Finds Hip-Hop.

Spotify is also introducing Editor Profiles, allowing listeners to discover more about the people behind its editorial recommendations, including their favourite tracks, albums and playlists.

Editor Notes and Profiles are initially available to Free and Premium users aged 16 and above in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

Spotify wants listening to feel more personal

The update reflects Spotify's broader push to make the platform more interactive and personal.

Rather than treating playlists simply as collections of songs, Spotify is turning them into spaces where users can attach stories, recommendations and memories to the content they share.

The move also gives Spotify another way to differentiate its experience from competitors such as Apple Music and YouTube Music.

The feature comes as Spotify continues to expand its global audience. The company recently reported surpassing 300 million paid subscribers, while its total monthly active user base reached 777 million.

With Playlist Notes, Spotify is betting that the future of streaming isn't only about what people listen to — but also why they listen to it.
