Electric mobility company SUN Mobility, in partnership with Vivo Energy, has launched an open-architecture battery-swapping network in Kenya, making the country the starting point for the company's wider expansion across Africa.

The platform currently has 35 battery-swapping stations operating in Nairobi and Mombasa and is designed to support several types of electric vehicles from different manufacturers.

The launch targets one of the biggest challenges facing electric mobility in Africa: ensuring that EV users have convenient and reliable access to charged batteries.

One network for multiple EV manufacturers

Unlike closed battery-swapping systems built around a single vehicle brand, SUN Mobility's network is designed to support vehicles from multiple manufacturers.

The system works with electric motorcycles, scooters, passenger tuk-tuks and cargo three-wheelers.

This open approach means manufacturers do not need to build separate battery-swapping networks for their vehicles.

For riders and fleet operators, it could also provide greater flexibility because they can use a shared infrastructure network rather than being tied to a particular manufacturer's charging ecosystem.

Lower operating costs for riders

SUN Mobility says its battery-swapping model can offer meaningful savings compared with petrol-powered vehicles.

At a daily distance of about 100 kilometres, the company estimates operating costs could be around 20% lower than petrol vehicles.

At 150 kilometres per day, the savings could increase to approximately 35%.

Those savings could be especially relevant for commercial riders and delivery operators, whose businesses are highly sensitive to fuel prices.

Instead of waiting for a battery to charge, riders can exchange a depleted battery for a charged one at a swapping station and continue their journey.

Kenya becomes the African launch market

SUN Mobility has selected Kenya as the first major market for its African expansion.

The country has a growing electric-mobility sector, particularly around electric motorcycles and three-wheelers, making it a potentially suitable environment for a battery-swapping model.

The company plans to roll out compatible vehicles from more than 10 manufacturers in the coming weeks.

The manufacturers displayed at the launch include Afrina Neopower, BGauss, Fika Mobility, Motovolt, Odysse, Piaggio, QJ-YY, Sprocomm, VMoto and Wylex.

SUN Mobility already operates at scale in India

The company is bringing an established model to Africa rather than testing battery swapping for the first time.

Its India network currently supports more than 125,000 vehicles through over 2,000 stations across 25 cities, with more than 30 vehicle-manufacturer partners.

SUN Mobility says this experience provides the foundation for its African expansion.

Technology behind the swapping system

The platform includes several components developed by SUN Mobility.

Its Smart Batteries are designed to be rugged and upgradeable without requiring major changes to compatible vehicles.

The company says the system is supported by more than 450 patents, design registrations and trademarks, built through nine years of internal development.

Its Quick Interchange Stations are designed for high-volume battery exchange and use thermal controls to support safe and efficient battery charging.

A cloud-based Smart Network manages batteries, stations, customers and maintenance, giving the company visibility across the network.

Vivo Energy partnership expands the potential footprint

The African expansion is being supported by a broader partnership with Vivo Energy, which operates Shell and Engen-branded service stations across the continent.

The partnership could give SUN Mobility access to more than 4,200 service stations in 29 African countries.

This creates an interesting opportunity to transform existing fuel-station infrastructure into multi-energy locations where drivers can access both conventional and electric mobility services.

Rather than constructing an entirely new network of locations, battery-swapping stations could be installed at places where motorists and commercial riders already stop regularly.

Why battery swapping matters in Africa

Charging remains one of the major barriers to widespread electric-vehicle adoption.

For commercial riders, a conventional charging model can mean losing productive time while a vehicle's battery recharges.

Battery swapping changes that equation.

A rider can exchange a depleted battery for a charged unit within a dedicated network, reducing downtime and making electric vehicles more practical for high-mileage commercial use.

An open network can also help address another challenge: fragmented EV ecosystems.

If multiple manufacturers use the same swapping infrastructure, the cost of building out the network does not have to be duplicated across individual brands.

Africa-wide ambitions

SUN Mobility plans to expand considerably beyond Kenya.

Over the next five years, the company says it aims to deploy more than 160,000 electric vehicles and 2,500 battery-swapping stations across Africa.

Kenya will serve as the initial market before the network expands through Vivo Energy's wider African retail footprint.

The long-term ambition is to establish what SUN Mobility describes as a universal battery-swapping network that can support different manufacturers and vehicle categories.

The bigger opportunity

The partnership could have implications beyond electric motorcycles.

For Africa's transport sector, lower running costs, reduced exposure to fuel-price volatility and faster access to vehicle energy could make electric mobility more attractive to commercial operators.

For vehicle manufacturers, shared infrastructure could reduce the cost and complexity of entering new markets.

And for existing service-station operators, EV battery swapping offers a potential way to evolve from traditional fuel retailing into broader multi-energy mobility hubs.

The Kenyan launch is therefore about more than 35 stations.

It is an early test of whether a shared, manufacturer-neutral battery network can provide the infrastructure needed to move electric mobility from a niche technology toward a scalable transportation model across Africa.
