TECNO has expanded its 2026 Pova smartphone lineup with the launch of the Pova 8 Pro 5G, a performance-focused device designed to appeal to users looking for gaming power, a high-refresh-rate display and improved camera capabilities.

The new Pro model builds on the standard Pova 8 5G with upgrades including an AMOLED display, a more powerful MediaTek chipset, improved thermal management and optical image stabilisation.

The phone also retains TECNO's distinctive Alive Matrix design, which uses a large array of Mini LEDs on the rear panel for notifications, charging effects and other interactions.

Pova 8 Pro 5G availability and price

TECNO unveiled the Pova 8 Pro 5G globally on July 22, 2026, before officially launching the device in India on August 18.

Sales in India are scheduled to begin on August 21.

The Indian market will receive two configurations:

  • 8GB RAM + 256GB storage: ₹49,999, with a launch promotional price of ₹46,999
  • 12GB RAM + 512GB storage: ₹54,999

As of August 20, TECNO has not announced official Nigerian, Kenyan, Ghanaian, US or UK pricing or availability.

Potential buyers in those markets should therefore be cautious about unofficial prices circulating online.

A brighter 144Hz AMOLED display

One of the biggest upgrades over the standard Pova 8 5G is the display.

The Pova 8 Pro 5G comes with a 6.78-inch HyperLux AMOLED panel offering a 2644 × 1208 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate.

TECNO claims peak brightness can reach 4,500 nits, while the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i.

The combination of AMOLED technology and a high refresh rate should make the device particularly appealing for gaming and multimedia consumption.

Alive Matrix returns

TECNO has continued the visual identity introduced with this generation of Pova phones through its Alive Matrix rear panel.

The system contains 177 individually controlled Mini LEDs that can respond to more than 49 scenarios.

These include notifications, charging and gaming-related effects.

Rather than serving purely as a decorative feature, TECNO is positioning Alive Matrix as an interactive part of the phone's design.

Built for gaming performance

The Pova 8 Pro 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate, manufactured using a 4nm process.

Graphics performance is handled by an Arm Mali-G615 MC2 GPU, while TECNO has also included a dedicated P1 graphics chip designed to optimise gaming frame rates.

Keeping performance stable during demanding workloads is supported by TECNO's 5K IceShield cooling system, which includes a 5,000mm² vapour chamber.

The company is clearly targeting users who want a phone capable of handling gaming and other demanding applications without excessive heat affecting performance.

6,500mAh battery with bypass charging

The Pova 8 Pro 5G packs a 6,500mAh battery and supports 45W wired charging.

TECNO says the device can go from empty to fully charged in approximately one hour.

The phone also supports 10W reverse wired charging, allowing it to provide power to other compatible devices.

For gamers, one of the more notable features is bypass charging. This allows power to be directed toward the phone's system instead of continuously charging the battery while gaming, potentially reducing heat and battery wear.

50MP Sony camera with OIS

TECNO has equipped the Pova 8 Pro 5G with a 50MP main camera using Sony's LYTIA 700C sensor.

The primary camera also includes optical image stabilisation (OIS), which can help reduce blur caused by hand movement when taking photos or recording video.

The main camera is paired with an 8MP ultrawide camera, while selfies are handled by a 13MP front-facing camera.

This represents another area where the Pro model moves beyond the standard Pova 8.

Interestingly, the Pro model does not have the larger battery.

The standard Pova 8 5G offers an 8,000mAh battery, while the Pro prioritises a slimmer design, display quality, camera stabilisation and performance hardware.

Software and long-term support

The Pova 8 Pro 5G runs HiOS 16 based on Android 16.

TECNO is promising two generations of Android OS updates and three years of security updates for the device.

That gives the Pova 8 Pro 5G a stronger long-term software proposition than many budget-focused smartphones, although its overall value will ultimately depend on regional pricing.

Should you consider the Pova 8 Pro 5G?

The Pova 8 Pro 5G is clearly designed for users who want performance without moving into the traditional flagship price category.

Its biggest strengths include the 144Hz AMOLED display, Dimensity 7400 Ultimate chipset, 5,000mm² cooling system, 50MP OIS camera and 6,500mAh battery.

However, users whose top priority is battery endurance may prefer the standard Pova 8 5G because of its larger 8,000mAh battery.

For now, the biggest unanswered question for African buyers is pricing and availability. TECNO has yet to announce official launch details for Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana.
