Young Africans Are Looking to TikTok for Knowledge
Research from GWI covering Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya during 2025 indicates strong interest in technology among TikTok users.
In Nigeria, 72% of TikTok users surveyed said they were interested in technology. The figure stood at 61% in South Africa, where TikTok users were also 9% more likely than non-users to express an interest in technology.
In Kenya, 56% of TikTok users reported an interest in technology, making them 16% more likely than non-TikTok users to express an interest in the subject.
Interest in science is also significant, with 31% of users in Nigeria, 35% in South Africa and 31% in Kenya expressing an interest in the field.
Educational Content Is Growing
The interest extends beyond STEM.
According to the same research, 30% of TikTok users in Nigeria, 39% in Kenya and 42% in South Africa said they had watched or listened to educational content online during 2025.
This shows that online learning has become an important part of how young people across the region consume information.
TikTok's short-video format allows creators to present lessons in smaller, more digestible pieces. A mathematics problem can be explained in under a minute, a scientific concept can be demonstrated visually, and practical career or business advice can be presented through real-life examples.
