TikTok could soon make it possible for users to send money to one another without leaving the app.

According to a Bloomberg report, the social media platform is developing a peer-to-peer (P2P) payment feature that would allow users in the United States to send and receive funds directly through TikTok's direct messaging system.

The proposed service would reportedly be powered by TikTok Pay, the company's existing digital payments infrastructure used in parts of Southeast Asia, including transactions connected to TikTok Shop.

How TikTok's proposed payment feature could work

Details discovered in the code of a recent version of TikTok's U.S. iOS application provide clues about how the feature could operate.

Recipients would reportedly receive a payment notification with an option to accept the money. Senders could also include a personal message alongside a transfer, making the experience similar to P2P payment services that allow users to attach notes to transactions.

This could allow users to do things such as send money to friends, split expenses or transfer funds during conversations without having to switch to another financial application.

However, the feature is not currently available to the public.

TikTok reportedly told Bloomberg that the functionality is not being externally tested at this stage. This means there is currently no confirmed launch date, and TikTok could still change or abandon the feature before it reaches users.

TikTok is moving beyond social media

The potential payment feature fits into TikTok's broader strategy of becoming more than a platform for watching short videos.

The company has expanded into areas including e-commerce, digital payments, search, local discovery and other services that keep users within its ecosystem.

TikTok has also been exploring opportunities in financial services. Reuters previously reported that the company applied to Brazil's central bank for authorization to operate as a fintech, with plans reportedly involving payment and lending services.

If TikTok eventually introduces P2P transfers in Western markets, payments could become another major component of its growing ecosystem.

A new battle between social platforms and fintech apps

TikTok's potential move would also place it closer to established payment platforms such as Venmo and Zelle.

It would not be the first major social platform to pursue this strategy. Other technology companies are also attempting to combine communication, social networking and financial services within a single application.

X, formerly known as Twitter, has similarly been developing financial services through its X Money initiative.

The larger trend is clear: technology companies are increasingly looking for ways to turn their platforms into places where users can not only communicate and consume content, but also shop, pay and transfer money.

For TikTok, integrating payments directly into DMs could make everyday money transfers another part of the platform's expanding ecosystem.

What happens next?

For now, TikTok's P2P payment system remains an early-stage development, not a confirmed product launch.

If the company eventually rolls it out, the feature could make TikTok significantly more competitive in the digital payments space while further blurring the line between social media and financial technology.

In short: TikTok may be preparing to turn its DMs into more than a place for conversations — potentially allowing users to send money without leaving the app.
