Music software has traditionally been built by specialist developers who spend months or years designing synthesizers, effects and virtual instruments.

Lunacy wants to make that process more accessible.

The company behind music plugins such as Cube has launched Nova, a platform that allows creators to build custom music tools using AI and eventually sell those tools to other musicians.

The platform is starting with a relatively small catalogue of plugins, but Lunacy says its longer-term vision is much broader: give creators the ability to develop their own plugins, modify existing ones and distribute them through a dedicated marketplace.

Nova starts with 10 music plugins

At launch, Nova includes 10 plugins covering a range of sounds and creative effects.

The initial collection includes instruments aimed at producing crunchy chiptune sounds, vintage-style synthesizer textures and darker ambient sounds.

The first plugins were created by Lunacy and a limited group of partner developers.

That means Nova's initial experience is still curated rather than an open marketplace where anyone can immediately upload a plugin.

But that is expected to change.

Nova Builder is the bigger idea

Lunacy's longer-term plan revolves around Nova Builder.

The upcoming tool is designed to allow creators to build their own plugins with AI rather than requiring them to start with traditional software-development skills.

Creators will eventually be able to build original music tools or remix existing ones.

That could fundamentally change who gets to participate in music-plugin development.

Today, creating a professional VST instrument or audio effect generally requires knowledge of programming, audio processing, user-interface design and digital signal processing.

An AI-assisted development environment could lower some of those barriers.

A producer could potentially describe the kind of instrument or effect they want, experiment with its behaviour and refine it without having to build every technical component from scratch.

The DAW is becoming part of the AI interface

Nova is also designed to operate alongside a creator's existing digital audio workstation, or DAW.

The platform provides an interface for browsing and loading Nova plugins directly inside the production environment.

That matters because musicians generally do not want to leave their workflow every time they need to find or test a new instrument.

Instead, Nova is positioning itself as a layer between plugin discovery, creation and music production.

The result could eventually look less like a traditional plugin store and more like a creative development platform for musicians.

AI is moving from making music to making music software

There is an important distinction between Nova and AI music generators.

Generative music platforms typically focus on producing songs, melodies, vocals or other finished audio from prompts.

Nova is targeting a different layer of the production process.

Rather than asking AI to make the song, the creator can use AI to help create the tool used to make the song.

That could include synthesizers, effects, instruments and other specialised production utilities.

For experienced producers, this could mean experimenting with highly specific tools that might never have been commercially viable for a conventional plugin developer to build.

For less technical creators, it could provide an entry point into software creation.

The marketplace could become the real test

Nova's most ambitious element may ultimately be its marketplace.

If Nova Builder opens to everyone, Lunacy will have to solve a problem that every creator platform eventually encounters: quality control.

Making it easy to create thousands of plugins is useful only if musicians can find the ones worth using.

The platform could therefore eventually need systems for discovery, reviews, categorisation, compatibility, pricing and developer reputation.

There is also a technical question.

A plugin is not simply a piece of generated text. It has to behave reliably inside a professional audio environment, process sound correctly and avoid introducing crashes, excessive latency or other problems into a production workflow.

That makes audio software a particularly interesting test for AI-assisted development.

Existing developers could also get a new distribution channel

Nova does not necessarily have to be only for newcomers.

Experienced plugin developers could use AI-assisted tools to prototype ideas faster, experiment with unusual interfaces or modify existing concepts.

The marketplace could also provide independent developers with another route to reach musicians.

That creates a potentially broader ecosystem in which Lunacy supplies the creation infrastructure, developers supply the tools and musicians become the users and customers.

What happens when anyone can build a synthesizer?

The bigger question is what happens when plugin creation becomes much easier.

Music production already has an enormous ecosystem of virtual instruments and effects. But traditional development costs mean that developers have to decide which ideas are commercially worthwhile.

AI could change that calculation.

Instead of spending months developing a niche instrument that might appeal to only a few thousand musicians, a creator could potentially prototype and test the idea much faster.

That could result in more experimental software — but also a flood of low-quality or repetitive plugins.

Nova's success will therefore depend not only on how capable its AI tools become, but also on whether it can create an ecosystem where useful tools rise above the noise.

Lunacy is betting on the creator, not just the consumer

The launch reflects a broader shift in generative AI.

Early AI products largely positioned people as consumers: generate an image, write a song, create a video or produce some text.

Increasingly, AI platforms are trying to make users builders.

Nova applies that philosophy to music production.

Instead of simply giving musicians more AI-generated sounds, Lunacy is attempting to give them a way to create the instruments and tools behind those sounds.

If Nova Builder delivers on that promise, the distinction between musician, producer and music-software developer could become considerably less rigid.

For now, however, Nova remains an early-stage platform with a limited initial catalogue. The larger experiment will begin when creators can actually build, remix and sell their own plugins.

The most interesting part of Nova isn't the 10 plugins available today.

It is the possibility of turning plugin development itself into a creative activity.

Music producers already experiment with sounds, effects and production techniques. If AI can remove some of the technical barriers involved in building software, the next generation of music tools could come from people who previously would never have considered themselves plugin developers.

But making creation easy is only half the challenge.

Nova will ultimately have to prove that AI-generated or AI-assisted plugins can be reliable enough for serious production — and that its marketplace can help musicians find genuinely useful tools rather than simply generating an endless catalogue of software.

That makes Nova worth watching not because it has 10 new plugins, but because it is testing a bigger question:
