Meta Launches Waddle World, an AI-Powered Virtual Pet That Chats With Users
The Tamagotchi-inspired app lets users care for a pixel pet that responds to diary entries with AI-generated messages and illustrations. For now, its availability is limited to the Philippines.
Meta has introduced Waddle World, an AI-powered virtual pet app that combines nostalgic pet-care gameplay with artificial intelligence, turning a familiar gaming concept into an interactive digital journaling experience.
The app allows users to hatch a virtual pet, feed it, play mini-games and share details about their day. Unlike traditional virtual pets, however, Waddle World uses Meta AI to respond to users' diary entries with personalised messages and illustrated doodles.
The concept draws comparisons to Tamagotchi, the popular virtual pet toy that became a global phenomenon in the 1990s. Waddle World adds a conversational AI element, giving users a digital companion that can respond to what they write or say.
How Waddle World Works
Waddle World uses a colourful, 16-bit visual style reminiscent of classic video games. Users begin by hatching an egg to create a virtual pet, which they can visit, feed and entertain.
Its main feature is an interactive journal. Users can type or dictate entries about their daily experiences, and their virtual pet responds with a written message and a small illustration inspired by the conversation.
The app also gives pets different moods, including happiness, hunger, sleepiness and boredom. Users can play mini-games to earn points that can be spent on virtual food, toys and other items.
Meta describes the experience as a daily journal presented through a virtual pet, rather than a conventional game focused on scores or competitive rankings.
More Than a Traditional Virtual Pet
Traditional virtual pet games focus primarily on feeding, entertaining and maintaining a digital creature. Waddle World builds on that format by introducing conversational AI and journaling.
The pet can respond to personal updates and refer to information shared across interactions, creating a more personalised experience over time. The app also sends users weekly illustrated postcards based on things they have discussed or details about the pet.
This approach reflects a broader trend in consumer AI: presenting artificial intelligence through familiar, entertaining experiences rather than requiring users to interact with a conventional chatbot interface.
Availability and Privacy Considerations
Although Waddle World has appeared on mobile app stores, reports indicate that its initial availability is limited to the Philippines. Meta has not announced a confirmed wider international rollout date. Nigerian users should therefore check local app-store availability rather than assume the app can already be downloaded in Nigeria.
Privacy is also relevant because journaling can involve personal experiences, emotions and other sensitive information. Google Play's listing says the app may collect personal information, app activity and other data. It also states that data is encrypted in transit and that users can request deletion of their data. Users should review the app's privacy policy and permissions before sharing personal information.
What Waddle World Means for Consumer AI
Waddle World demonstrates how technology companies are experimenting with more playful ways to bring AI into everyday life.
By combining virtual-pet mechanics with AI-generated conversations and illustrations, Meta is testing an experience that sits somewhere between a casual game, a digital journal and an AI companion.
Whether the concept gains wider adoption will depend on how users respond to its features, how effectively it protects personal information and whether Meta expands availability beyond its initial market.
For now, Waddle World offers a glimpse of how AI applications may increasingly be built around ongoing personal interactions rather than one-off questions and answers.
