Moniepoint Restructures Engineering and Product Teams as Some Roles Become Redundant
The Nigerian fintech is introducing smaller, platform-focused teams and new architectural roles to improve efficiency, strengthen product development and support expansion into new markets.
Nigerian fintech company Moniepoint is restructuring its Engineering and Product functions as it seeks to improve operational efficiency and support its expansion into new markets. The changes will make some existing roles redundant, although the company has not disclosed how many positions will be affected.
In a holding statement, Moniepoint said the restructuring would introduce a platform-based operating model, with smaller, specialised teams responsible for developing and managing products from end to end.
The company said the new structure would also create platform architect positions to design and oversee the technical systems supporting each platform group.
Why Moniepoint Is Changing Its Structure
Moniepoint said the restructuring reflects its evolution over the past decade, from a single product into a broader group of financial services businesses.
According to the company, that growth has been supported by proprietary technology developed in-house to address the scale and specific needs of African commerce.
Under the new operating model, smaller product teams will have greater autonomy and clearer accountability for their work. Moniepoint expects this approach to accelerate product development, improve operational reliability and deliver more consistent services to its expanding customer base.
The changes are also intended to strengthen the company's technical foundations as it enters additional markets.
New Platform Architect Roles, but Some Jobs Will Go
The restructuring will introduce platform architects responsible for designing and overseeing the technical systems on which the company's platform groups operate.
Moniepoint said the changes would require fewer roles in some areas while creating new positions in others.
Employees whose current positions become redundant will be considered for available roles elsewhere in the business, according to the company. Where no suitable alternative position is identified, Moniepoint said a redundancy consultation process would begin.
The fintech has not announced the number of employees who may be affected or provided a timeline for completing the restructuring.
Expansion Beyond Nigeria
The organisational changes come as Moniepoint grows beyond its established Nigerian operations, including efforts to expand its presence in Kenya.
The company provides payments, banking, credit and business management services to businesses and individuals. Its offerings help merchants accept payments, manage cash flow and access tools to support their operations, while individual customers can use its financial services for everyday banking.
Moniepoint said its agent network covers all 774 local government areas in Nigeria. It also said its subsidiaries process more than $400 billion in annual digital payment transaction value.
The scale of its operations makes reliable technology infrastructure and efficient product development important as the company seeks to support more customers and expand into new markets.
What the Restructuring Means for Moniepoint
For Moniepoint, the new operating model is intended to give product teams greater ownership while establishing clearer technical oversight across its platforms.
Smaller teams with end-to-end responsibility could help reduce coordination delays and allow products to evolve more quickly. Platform architects could also help maintain consistency in the underlying systems as the company expands its services.
However, the changes also mean uncertainty for employees whose roles may be eliminated. The eventual impact on staff will depend partly on the availability of alternative positions and the outcome of the consultation process.
Moniepoint said Engineering and Product remain central to its business and expressed appreciation for employees' contributions, adding that it expects the new structure to strengthen the company for customers, employees and partners.
Moniepoint is reshaping its technology organisation to support a larger, more complex fintech business. While the company expects the move to improve efficiency and accelerate expansion, the number of jobs affected remains undisclosed.
