OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-6 With Intelligent UI, Turning ChatGPT Into an Interactive Workspace

OpenAI is rolling out GPT-6 globally in ChatGPT, introducing a major change in how users interact with the AI assistant.

The headline feature is called Intelligent UI, a new capability that allows ChatGPT to combine text with visual and interactive elements including graphics, charts, tappable buttons, forms and small tools directly inside a conversation.

Rather than forcing every question into a traditional text-and-chat format, GPT-6 can decide when an interactive interface would make the answer more useful.

OpenAI says the goal is to make everyday answers more visual, help users understand complicated subjects and allow people to create useful tools simply by describing what they need.

ChatGPT can now build the interface around the task

The biggest change with GPT-6 is not simply that ChatGPT can produce better text.

It is that the answer itself can become a tool.

Ask for help planning a meal for a group, for example, and ChatGPT can create an interactive recipe experience where quantities change as the number of guests changes.

Ask for help splitting a restaurant bill and it can create a bill-splitting calculator.

Ask about a complex concept and it can use an interactive diagram or visual explanation.

Users can even ask ChatGPT to create small games that can be played directly inside the conversation.

OpenAI says the system determines which format is most appropriate for the question. If a normal written response is the best option, it can simply provide text rather than adding unnecessary visual elements.

From chatbot to on-demand software

This represents a broader shift in the role ChatGPT could play.

Traditional software requires users to open an application, find the right feature and learn how to operate it.

With Intelligent UI, the user can describe the task first and ChatGPT can construct an interface around it.

That could mean creating a calculator for a particular financial scenario, a planning tool for a trip, a checklist for a project or an interactive explanation for something difficult to understand.

In effect, the AI is moving from answering questions to creating temporary software experiences around those questions.

OpenAI says it built Intelligent UI using a library of native, streamable components and a compiler that can process the interface while the model is generating the response. This allows parts of an interactive answer to appear progressively rather than waiting for the entire interface to be completed.

GPT-6 can start answering before it finishes thinking

OpenAI is also changing how ChatGPT handles complex reasoning.

Instead of waiting for the model to complete its reasoning process before producing an answer, GPT-6 can begin responding while it continues to think or use tools.

The response can then build progressively, with additional findings added as the model works through the task.

OpenAI says this approach is designed to reduce the feeling of waiting for a long reasoning process to finish.

For questions requiring web searches, the company reports that GPT-6 Instant begins answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant in its internal evaluation. OpenAI also says GPT-6 improves the quality of answers requiring web research.

The 44% figure is an OpenAI internal benchmark, so it should not be interpreted as a universal guarantee that every user will experience a 44% faster response.

GPT-6 is reaching Free users too

The rollout is happening in stages.

GPT-6 with Intelligent UI began rolling out globally on October 7 to:

  • ChatGPT Plus

  • Pro

  • Business

  • Enterprise

From October 8, the rollout expands to Free and Go users. Enterprise access can still depend on workspace administrator settings.

OpenAI says the model configuration differs by plan.

GPT-6 Sol powers Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise.

GPT-6 Luna powers Free and Go.

Both models are designed for everyday conversation and support Intelligent UI.

There is an important distinction, however: OpenAI says its Pro reasoning option uses GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI, while Intelligent UI works across Instant through Extra High reasoning settings.

This update is about ChatGPT, not every OpenAI product

The GPT-6 Intelligent UI rollout applies to the Chat experience.

OpenAI says the models powering Work and Codex are not changing as part of this release.

That distinction matters because the announcement could otherwise be interpreted as a complete model overhaul across the entire OpenAI product ecosystem.

It is specifically a major upgrade to the ChatGPT conversational experience.

What Intelligent UI could mean for everyday users

The potential impact goes beyond making ChatGPT look more attractive.

For students, interactive diagrams could make difficult concepts easier to explore.

For professionals, ChatGPT could produce small tools for calculations, planning and decision-making without requiring them to build software separately.

For businesses, an AI-generated interface could potentially turn a one-off request into something employees can interact with immediately.

For ordinary users, the biggest change may simply be that they no longer have to know exactly what tool they need before asking for help.

They can describe the goal.

ChatGPT can help create the interface.

A possible challenge: knowing when not to add an interface

There is also a design challenge hidden inside Intelligent UI.

More interaction does not automatically mean a better answer.

Sometimes a simple sentence is better than a chart.

Sometimes a table is better than a graphic.

Sometimes users simply want an answer without buttons, animations or additional controls.

OpenAI says GPT-6 has been trained to make those decisions and can still provide a traditional text response when that is the most useful format.

That judgment may become one of the most important parts of the feature.

If AI interfaces become too visually busy, users could end up spending more time navigating the answer than understanding it.

ChatGPT is moving closer to software that adapts to you

For decades, people have generally had to learn how software works.

You learn where the buttons are.

You learn which menus to open.

You learn which settings control which functions.

OpenAI is proposing a different direction with Intelligent UI: describe what you want to accomplish, and the software adapts itself to the task.

That does not mean traditional apps are disappearing overnight.

But it suggests a future where the boundary between a chatbot, a software interface and a personal tool becomes increasingly difficult to define.

GPT-6's biggest story may not be that ChatGPT is becoming smarter.

It is that ChatGPT is becoming more capable of creating the interface between the user and the task.

A calculator does not need to exist as a permanent app if AI can build one when you need it.

A complicated lesson does not necessarily need a static diagram if the learner can interact with the explanation.

And a planning problem does not always require a specialised piece of software if an AI can construct the necessary tool inside the conversation.

The real test will be whether Intelligent UI makes ChatGPT genuinely more useful — rather than simply more visually impressive.
