Google has expanded its AI ecosystem by bringing Gemini Spark to macOS, allowing Mac users to access its agentic AI assistant directly from their desktops.

The launch strengthens Google's position in the growing market for AI desktop assistants, where it now competes with tools such as Claude Desktop, Microsoft Copilot and other AI-powered productivity platforms.

Gemini Spark Comes to macOS

Gemini Spark is now available through the Gemini desktop app for Mac, giving users an AI assistant capable of organising files, analysing documents and assisting with everyday productivity tasks.

At launch, users can use Spark to organise files stored on their Mac or turn local documents into Google Workspace files such as spreadsheets and documents. For example, invoices stored on a computer can be converted into a budgeting spreadsheet with AI assistance.

Google also says support for remote, multi-step tasks is on the way, allowing users to assign jobs from their phones that Spark can complete on their Mac.

New Integrations Expand What Spark Can Do

Alongside the macOS launch, Google has introduced several new integrations that make Spark more useful for everyday tasks.

The AI assistant now works with Google Tasks and Google Keep, allowing users to manage notes and to-do lists more naturally. It also connects with third-party services including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals.

These integrations allow Spark to complete actions such as designing marketing materials, ordering groceries, booking restaurant reservations and scheduling apartment viewings from within a single assistant.

Google has also added real-time topic tracking, enabling Spark to monitor live information such as breaking news, sports scores, stock prices, weather updates and online trends.

Built for the Next Generation of AI Assistants

Google says Gemini Spark will also support custom Model Context Protocol (MCP) connections, allowing users to integrate additional apps and create more personalised AI workflows.

For now, the macOS beta is available exclusively to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.

Why It Matters

The arrival of Gemini Spark on Mac reflects the growing competition among AI companies to build intelligent assistants that go beyond answering questions and can actively complete tasks on behalf of users.

As AI assistants become more deeply integrated with operating systems and productivity apps, they are increasingly evolving into digital co-workers capable of managing files, coordinating workflows and automating everyday activities.
