Sony to Stop Releasing New PlayStation Games on Disc From 2028
Sony
has announced that all new PlayStation games will be released
exclusively in digital format starting in January 2028, bringing an end
to physical game discs for future titles.
The
move marks one of the biggest shifts in PlayStation's history as Sony responds
to growing demand for digital game downloads and online distribution.
PlayStation Goes Fully Digital
Beginning
in 2028, every new PlayStation game will be sold digitally through the PlayStation
Store and authorised retailers. Games released before the transition will
continue to be available on physical discs.
Sony
said the decision reflects changing consumer behaviour, with most PlayStation
users already choosing digital downloads over boxed copies.
According
to the company's latest financial results, digital purchases accounted for 85%
of full-game sales across PS4 and PS5, while physical discs represented just 15%.
The End of an Era for Physical Games
For
decades, physical game discs have been a core part of gaming culture, allowing
players to collect, trade and resell their favourite titles.
However,
as internet speeds improve and digital storefronts become more popular, demand
for boxed games has steadily declined. Retailers that once relied on physical
game sales have also been affected, with stores such as GameStop continuing
to reduce their physical footprint.
The
announcement follows recent criticism from fans after the "physical"
edition of Grand Theft Auto VI was revealed to contain only a download
code instead of an actual game disc, highlighting that many players still value
physical collections.
Older PlayStation Stores Also Closing
Alongside
the announcement, Sony confirmed it will begin shutting down the PlayStation
Store for the PlayStation 3 in selected markets later this year,
followed by global closures of the PS3 and PlayStation Vita stores in
2027.
While
users will no longer be able to purchase new digital content after the
closures, Sony says previously purchased games will remain available for
download for the foreseeable future.
Why It Matters
Sony's
decision signals a major shift in the gaming industry as digital distribution
becomes the dominant way players buy and access games.
While
the transition offers greater convenience and lower distribution costs, it also
raises ongoing concerns around game ownership, preservation and the future of
physical game collecting as the industry moves further towards an all-digital
ecosystem.
